Dopff & Irion are based in the village of Riquewihr, one of the most beautiful villages along the wine route - La route des vins - which winds through Alsace. In this small medieval town, there were two families in particular who distinguished themselves; Dope and Irion. They had been making wine for more than 300 years separately when they joined forces in 1945. René Dopff broke with the old winemaking techniques and chose to focus on terroir and not grape types. He divided the vineyards at Château de Riquewihr into four, and renamed them with typically French names: Les Murailles, Les Sorcières, Les Maquisards and Les Amandiers. The wines made after the division of the vineyards expressed each particular terroir, and since then each has vineyard has been dedicated to a single type of grape. Today, the company is among the leaders in Alsace.
